FPT cooperated with Hitachi HealthCare to develop a new cancer treatment system
Proton Beam Therapy (PBT), a cancer treatment system co-developed by Hitachi HealthCare and FPT Software, has been implemented in Osaka’s cancer centre since mid-October. Thanks to this system, patient’s pain and duration of the radiation therapy will be reduced significantly.
The PBT system in Osaka’s cancer treatment system consists of 4-axis irradiation and 3 treatment rooms. The software system includes 6 applications, developed by the offshore team of FPT, providing various function such as radiation- and X-ray imaging, CBCT imaging, Positioning Image analysis, Real time tracking maker, Work list management and DICOM Server. Among which, the two most difficult techniques requiring the high accuracy are calculating robot arms position to control the patient’s table, match it with the proton-ray tube for exact radiation treatment and the image process function to track the movement of cancer cells following patient’s breath. It was these two functions that help to reduce the pain in the treatment process as the ray are shot more accurately, reducing the damage of the nearby cells.
Being responsible for image processing technology, Mr. Tran The Di Luan of FPT shared: “The most difficult part in processing images is not about the algorithms but how to reduce processing time and increase the accuracy. Only in this way can the pain be reduced during the treatment phase. The project team has applied the solution of processing algorithms in GPU with CUDA code”. Mr. Pham Khuong Duy of FPT, who is responsible for designing, also shared: “The calculation of robot’s arms position in the most accurate way is not a difficult part. The biggest challenge is the connection and communication between the system’s hardware and software. So as to successfully develop in offshore environment, we have to build a simulated environment similar to the real equipment at the hospital”.
After passing the intense test at the radiation room, on October 16th, the first 4 patients were treated with the new system. In this project, FPT Software team did participate in the full life-cycle process from the requirement analysis, designing, coding for the system’s core part to UAT in the test room and radiation test on the real equipment. The success of Osaka project has triggered so many cooperation opportunities between FPT and Hitachi HealthCare. Another big project developing systems for the leading cancer treatment centre in the US will be launched in 2019 on a scale of four times larger than the Osaka project for 2 branches of the centre with 6 treatment rooms in each branch.
With the slogan of “Not only developing software”, the FPT project team has been so proud of contributing their effort to help cancer patients all over the world. It is expected that more project will be delivered and implemented at hospitals in the future to help fight against cancer globally. This project has been featured on Japanese Media and Hitachi’s site.

From a Cloud Computing Expert to an Amazon Book Author
Nguyen Ngoc Thuan, a Cloud Security Analyst of FPT, is the author of an Amazon published book named “Microsoft Azure IaaS Defense In Depth Guide”, which equips enterprise with up-to-date knowledge to protect them from cyber threat.
In the US, Thuan is currently working as a Cloud Security Analyst in a project of FPT for a Fortune 50 Companies. He is responsible for designing and implementing proactive security controls across large DevOps segments. Thuan has been awarded a Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) 9 years in a row. He was also a guest speaker at many Microsoft technology international conferences in Europe and Asia.
With many years of experience in cloud security and cybersecurity, on July 2018, after 4-month writing, the book “Microsoft Azure IaaS Defense In Depth Guide” was published on Amazon and well-received by technology communities. Companies and organizations are starting to reap the benefits of using a cloud infrastructure, however, nothing is completely secure. “Cloud is what all are moving to, and cybersecurity is what all are dealing with. Migrated to Cloud does not mean that all your data is fully protected.” Thuan said.
In his book, Cloud Computing and its benefits like hardware cost savings, improved workloads and comprehensive automation are discussed. General security settings manual are also mentioned, for example, how to apply plans to comprehensively protect your system stored on Microsoft Azure IaaS or how to apply Microsoft Azure built-in features to blocking attack (brute-force, DDoS, surface attack). Furthermore, readers will have hands-on exercises on how to build a protected SharePoint Server 2013 on Microsoft Azure.
Thuan always tries to be a tactical person at the downfield dealing with cybersecurity. Thuan has published many eBooks, presentations for both domestic and foreign IT community, two of which are the SharePoint Customer Auditing Process and the WikiNinjas Guide to SharePoint 2013 with over 100,000 downloads. Currently, he is exploring several areas around cybersecurity and planning to write another book about cloud security to publish in the near future.
Joining FPT since May 6, 2014, Thuan’s first job was to build products on the SharePoint platform and manage a number of large SharePoint systems for Singapaore government. After moving to FPT USA, Thuan has opportunities to work with large clients in Cloud Computing projects and enhance different skills, including critical thinking, proactive communication and especially analytical skills. To congratulate the 10th birthday of FPT in the USA, Thuan expressed: “All of us look forward to another 10 year anniversary with another intensive growth. Thanks FPT USA for giving me the opportunity to grow up.”
