FPT Software Acquires FUNiX, Taking Lifelong Learning to New Level
Representatives of FPT Software and FUNiX at the ceremony held at F-Ville campus
On June 16, FPT Software officially acquired FUNiX, Vietnam’s first online university and a subsidiary of FPT Education, in a ceremony hosted at the company’s F-ville campus in Hanoi. The move is in line with FPT Software’s plans for nurturing skilled tech talents and building a lifelong learning culture.
According to FPT Software’s COO Tran Dang Hoa, the company joins forces with FUNiX to experiment with new educational models such as Hannah and Mentor, which emphasize on hands-on learning experiences and interactive activities. Having a online training program in-house, FPT Software employees will get to update their digital skills through degrees and certificates that range from Data Sciences, Software Engineering, Blockchain to Machine Learning.
In return, FUNiX students would gain access to the company’s advanced technology and extensive resources of real-life case studies, whitepapers, and so on.
As predicted by online recruitment site Vietnamworks, the country is in demand for 78,000 new tech employees each year. However, only 27 percent of IT graduates can meet workforce requirements.
Prior to the acquisition, FPT Software and FUNiX had actively worked together to build digital talents and address the shortage of high-skilled IT manpower in Vietnam. Last July, the company has helped FUNiX design curriculum and dedicated IT experts to FUNiX as mentors, as well as provided online learners with academic and professional support.
As one of Vietnam’s largest technology companies, FPT Software has taken human development seriously through a wide range of initiatives to encourage lifelong learning such as Campuslink, Fresher Program, on-demand training activities, compulsory MOOC learning, and so on.

FPT Software Kicks Off AICamp in Bid to Train Young Tech Talents
AICamp trainees and mentors at the kick-off event on June 16, 2020
Last Tuesday, FPT Software welcomed the first batch of students to its fresher program specialized in Artificial Intelligence (AI) – AICamp.
Launched in Vietnam’s south-central city of Quy Nhon, AICamp is part of the company’s plan to expand the AI talent pipeline and make advanced technologies accessible for local students. In 2020, FPT Software looks to select 20 high-performing students who have achieved academic success in Maths, Science and Technology subjects into the program. Half of them get onboard this June.
Over the next four to five months, trainees will have the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of AI, data modeling, coding, project management, and essential skills to start an AI career in the future. They also get to learn from FPT Software’s Data and AI experts through in-class training, workshops, as well as hands-on projects with the company.
To make AICamp more appealing, the company even pledged to help trainees achieve at least one AI/Data certification from Google, Amazon, or IBM upon completion of the program.
Vu Van Dong, Director of FPT Software Quy Nhon, sets high expectations for AICamp. “It is one of the important projects that will help us to foster the next-generation AI engineers and build a world-class AI center in Quy Nhon. Soon we will be able to provide a comprehensive portfolio of Data/AI related services and products for customers worldwide”.
Earlier this month, FPT started a strategic partnership with Mila – the world’s largest research institute in deep learning in a bid to deliver many more real-world AI applications such as those in natural language processing, smart factory, healthcare, agriculture, and so on. The partnership also opens up opportunities for FPT and its company affiliates to enhance AI capabilities and build a skilled digital workforce.
“This agreement also helps fulfill our aspiration for universal access to technologies, particularly AI core technologies. Not only tech enthusiasts in developed countries but also young, talented Vietnamese have the opportunity to exchange knowledge and research about AI”, said FPT Chairman Truong Gia Binh.

FPT Chairman Pledges to Help Japanese Companies Recover from COVID-19
At a webinar earlier this week, FPT Chairman Truong Gia Binh offered to help Japanese companies overcome COVID19 challenges through a new method that he called “business critical collaboration”.
Addressing more than 360 Japanese business leaders, Binh noted areas of potential collaboration including cost optimization, rebadging, joint venture and so on.
“Recently, we have upgraded the relationships with many of our Fortune 500 customers. A major US automotive manufacturer has agreed to engage FPT in their major projects, from enhancing software for existing car models to working on new ideas together”, he said. “This collaboration is not just about profit sharing. It also means sharing challenges so we could navigate the crisis and thrive together”.
FPT’s senior executives and guest speakers from Mitsubishi Vietnam, DENSO Manufacturing Vietnam, and JETRO at the webinar on June 24 2020
Binh noted four major challenges that Japanese companies are facing as a result of COVID-19, including supply chain disruption, revenue decline, business suspension, and lack of readiness for remote working.
“43 per cent of Japanese firms are struggling to adapt to remote working due to their inadequate IT infrastructure. The rest of the responders have reported that supply chain disruption, revenue decline, and business suspension are among their greatest difficulties during the COVID-19 time.”, he cited a recent survey of 300 business leaders conducted by FPT.
To overcome these challenges, companies in Japan should adopt digital transformation and diversify their supply chain, he suggested.
Holding the same viewpoint, DENSO Manufacturing Vietnam General Director Mr. Mitsuo Ota affirmed: “I believe that geo-diversification in the supply chain together with enhancing digital capabilities can help companies overcome this crisis”.
“Vietnam is a great destination for foreign investment, and Japanese firms could opt for remote offshore model”, said Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) Hanoi Office Manager Takeo Nakajima. “I believe that FPT could help Japanese businesses reinvent their supply chain with their capabilities in digital transformation”

FPT Chairman: Vietnam Stands As Next IT Outsourcing Powerhouse
“Vietnam has capabilities and advantages to become the next big name in IT outsourcing in the time of COVID-19”, said FPT Chairman Truong Gia Binh at the webinar co-hosted by FPT and the German Asia-Pacific Business Association (OAV) late May.
Coronavirus has swept across the world and left severe impacts on both society and economy. “IMF warned that the GDP growth of Europe would drop to -7.5% and that of Germany would drop to -7%. And maybe nearly half of the labor force are at risk of losing jobs. COVID-19 is likely to cost our economy 1 trillion USD in 2020”, Binh said. This socio-economic crisis forces businesses around the world to transform their operations and search for the right partners to survive this volatile situation together.
According to FPT Chairman, geo-diversification can play a game-changing role in the new normal as the pandemic revealed the fragility of familiar IT outsourcing destinations. “If you look for outsourcing, only a few countries stand there: India, China and now Vietnam.” Given the success against COVID-19, Vietnam has surged as a safe and promising location for investors to expand their network and set up offshore teams.
FPT Chairman Truong Gia Binh presented Vietnam as the agile outsourcing powerhouse
Suggesting Vietnam as the next destination to go for IT outsourcing, Binh reaffirmed the country’s advantages, from a dynamic ICT workforce of 900,000 people to a favourable business environment. “Vietnam Government offers a lot of incentives for IT area”, he said, noting that foreign investors in Vietnam could enjoy four years of tax exemption followed by nine years of 50% tax reduction.
“Vietnam has a clear policy for Industry 4.0. In the next few days, the Prime Minister of Vietnam will sign a digital transformation program for our country”, he added.
“If in the past, digital transformation is ‘nice-to-have’, now it stands for ‘must-have’, and ‘must-have’ in the context of safety”, said Binh about the significant role of digital transformation in the new normal.
Binh pledged FPT would be a trusted partner to companies in their digital transformation journey during this time of uncertainty. Having been active in the fight against Covid-19 early on, FPT has tailored several digital solutions to help businesses maintain business continuity, from enhancing IT infrastructure to automating back-office processes to support remote workers. The company looks to become a Top 50 global IT and digital transformation services provider by 2030.
“Digital transformation is the future. And Covid-19 is just a catalyst to the process”, he noted.

FPT Software’s RPA Platform akaBot Wins Record Deal With Japanese Client
FPT Software on Monday signed a five-year licensing agreement with a Japanese company, enabling the use of its RPA platform akaBot to develop an innovative staffing solution for the client.
While the contract amount was not disclosed, FPT Software’s Chief Delivery Officer Do Van Khac confirmed that it was “the most valuable licensing agreement” FPT Software ever obtained. Being a comprehensive RPA solution, akaBot automates hundreds of back-office operations, thus helping businesses save labor costs, boost productivity and minimize human errors.
“The client selected akaBot for its high-quality features and relevance to its long-term development roadmap”, Khac said, adding that FPT Software had signed a memorandum of understanding with the staffing firm in September.
akaBot was launched in 2018 and has since obtained significant achievements. In August, ThinkPower became akaBot’s first overseas agent in Taiwan, helping distribute and implement the RPA solutions for local financial companies. Most recently, akaBot was listed in the 2019 RPA Chaos Map report as a Top 30 RPA platform, alongside with big players such as UiPath and BluePrism. In the report, RPA Hack wrote: “this year, it included emerging tools that have lower licensing costs such as akaBot, Macroman, and Nalgo-bot”.
To date, akaBot has been implemented for more than 20 companies in Japan, South Korea, the US, as well as piloted at some Vietnamese banks.
Aspiring to become a world-class comprehensive digital transformation services provider, FPT Software has developed digital platforms and solutions through leveraging technologies such as artificial intelligence, analytics of Big Data, Robotic Process Automation (RPA), blockchain, etc, helping businesses worldwide to accelerate their digital transformation journey. The company also targeted to obtain a billion dollars in revenue by 2024.

FPT Software Launches GDPR - Compliant Data Protection Policy
In compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), FPT Software recently launched a Corporate Data Protection Policy on its official website, providing the necessary framework conditions for cross-border data transfer among FPT Software, Subsidiaries and legal entities.
Established in 1999, FPT Software has expanded its global presence to 24 countries and territories, serving more than 600 customers worldwide. In Europe, the company currently has subsidiaries in Germany, France, United Kingdom, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic with six offices and over 300 employees.
The Corporate Data Protection Policy lays out strict requirements for processing personal data of customers, business partners, employees or any other individual. It includes principles emphasizing on integrity and confidentiality. Ensuring data protection is the foundation of trustworthy business relationships and the reputation of FPT Software as a first-class business partner.
The policy ensures the adequate level of data protection prescribed by the EU GDPR,
Japan’s Act on Protection of Personal Information (APPI), Singapore Personal Data Protection Act 2012 (PDPA), or other national Personal Data Protection Regulations and the national laws for cross-border data transmission, including in countries that do not yet have adequate data protection laws.
Earlier on 3 June 2019, FPT Software appointed Michael Hering, a member of the Delivery Command Centre, as Global Data Protection Officer to oversee the company’s compliance with the EU GDPR. This is one of the company’s series of steps in ensuring security as well as protecting customer’s data and privacy.
In today’s digital world, data migrates from various locations, formats, and devices. It is crucial to develop a consistent method to protect data. This allows enterprises to design necessary applications and services that meet their business needs while safeguarding customer data.
GDPR was enforced on 25 May 2018 by the European Law, bringing the most substantial change in data privacy regulation in 20 years. It aims to standardize data protection laws and processing across the EU, affording individuals stronger, more consistent rights to access and control their personal information.
FPT Software is committed to ensuring the security and protection of its worldwide clients’ and partners’ information. Since its inception, the company has put in place a robust and effective data protection program to comply with existing laws and abides by the data protection principles.

FPT Helps Businesses Automate During COVID-19 with RPA Offers
FPT’s RPA solution akaBot helps companies reduce dependency on manpower and maintain business continuity during COVID-19
HANOI, Vietnam, April 8, 2020 – As the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic forces companies around the world to send workers home, Vietnam’s leading technology company FPT has helped them ease into the new reality with automation.
Over the next three months, existing customers of its featured product akaBot will be entitled to three extra months free of charge to the annual robotics process automation (RPA) licenses.
New customers who sign the RPA licensing agreement from now until the end of June will get the same offer, plus consulting services for the first business process automation at zero cost.
Work from Home with Ease
FPT’s RPA solution akaBot allows businesses to automate repetitive processes that would otherwise be done manually, freeing up remote-working manpower so they could maintain business continuity during COVID-19. It also helps businesses improve work productivity and reduce operating costs during this challenging time.
akaBot’s RPA solution has been provided to thirteen companies in six countries, operating in various domains, including finance, manufacturing, retail, and IT services. Examples of back-office processes that are in surging demand for automation range from responses to customer inquiries, loan processing, to granting remote access to internal networks and private resources via Virtual Desktop Infrastructure, Virtual Private Network, Microsoft OneDrive, etc.
Earlier in March, FPT also pledged to provide free security monitoring and incident response solutions to small and medium-sized businesses in Vietnam, helping prevent cybersecurity attacks as teleworkers access to company servers from remote and unsecured locations.
The company also worked with Vietnam’s Ministry of Information and Communications to deploy an AI-powered mobile application to provide real-time data on COVID-19 and at-home assessment of the infection risks based on user locations.
Vietnam’s COVID-19 Updates
On April 1, Vietnam’s Prime Minister officially declared COVID-19 a national epidemic and enforced social distancing throughout the country for 15 days, which could be extended to one month. The Government called on the public to “stay at home and work online” unless shopping for necessities or working in businesses that produce essential goods.
The country has won praises from foreign countries for its capability to keep COVID-19 in check despite limited resources. As of April 7, the country has confirmed 249 positive cases, half of which have recovered, and zero death.
However, Vietnam’s economy has been hit hard by the crisis. Nearly 35,000 businesses were forced to close in Q1-2020, according to a report released by Vietnam’s Ministry of Planning and Investment on Monday. More than half of them were suspended temporarily because of COVID-19, the report said.

Digital Transformation: Lessons from gurus
Digital transformation is hard. As reported by Forbes, more than 80 percent of digital transformations fail, with no exception to big names like GE, Procter & Gamble, and Nike. So last month, we gathered the strategic minds in digital transformation, thinkers and creators included, to the Global DX Summit 2019 and discussed how we should go about this process. These are things we learned from gurus at this exclusive event.
Kaizen is a Japanese business philosophy that originates from two Japanese words: Kai (improvement) and Zen (good). Later it became known as “continuous improvement”, which means making incremental changes that yield major improvements over time. According to FPT Chairman Truong Gia Binh, digital transformation should be viewed as ‘Digital Kaizen’, where businesses constantly optimize their operations and eliminate inefficiency through innovative solutions. In that light, digital transformation isn’t necessarily a big bang, but rather, a series of quick wins that build towards long-term success.
While ‘digital’ involves the use of technologies to reinvent how businesses operate and deliver value to customers, ‘transformation’ is about people. As FPT’s DX Advisor Chief Phuong Tram noted, digital transformation has to begin with people engagement and creating an environment where they are willing to change. “If you want to change, you have to engage people in parallel, you have to motivate people and begin with their heart in mind”, he said. The former CIO of Dupont constantly stressed the importance of people engagement throughout the summit. “If people are not with you, no mission, no strategy, no technology in the world can change”.
Nikhil Dwarakanath, Grab’s Head of Analytics insisted that the key to navigate digital transformation is through data-driven insights. In a thirty-minute keynote speech, Nikhil shared how the ride-hailing startup leveraged the power of data to develop the Southeast Asia’s super-app. For instance, by analyzing millions of rows of GPS location data, Grab could track multiple metrics in real-time, including the customers’ travel patterns, their preferences, their likes and dislikes, helping the company constantly refine its products and enhance customer experience. Data-driven digital transformation, he added, is an extremely complex and time-consuming process, but customers must always be put at the core.
By its very nature, digital transformation is constantly evolving and inevitably the game of trials and errors. “You can spend a year or sometimes more to put your house in order, put your data together and feel good about it. And then two months later everything’s changed and it doesn’t work anymore”, Barret Brown, Head of APAC at Palantir Technologies spoke the hard truth. To conclude his presentation about data democratization, the DX practitioner stressed the importance of agility, that is being able to build a dynamic system and particularly “the ontology layer has to be the ontology itself”. “It has to be flexible, you can model it one way and then learn something new about the world and say “Oh I actually need to change that”, “OK no problem, that’s good”.
While each guru had an unique view to digital transformation, one thing they all agreed on was that digital transformation should be an incremental innovation rather than a huge, cumbersome project that create radically changes to the organization overnight. It should be data-driven, flexible, and above all, centered around people, customers and employees included.

FPT heats up Southeast Asia’s race for self-driving cars
The race for driver-less cars in Southeast Asia gets intense as its autonomous pioneer FPT has planned to kick off a new autonomous project next Thursday in Hanoi. It seems that the global IT firm has kept itself busy since its made-in-Vietnam autonomous solutions were introduced for the first time in 2017.
FPT Global Automotive (FGA) – a strategic unit specializing on automotive technology solutions, has doubled the number of technology experts over the past two years. Some 2,000 employees have worked round the clock to make autonomous vehicles a reality. In October 2017, its first driver-less car hit the road, traveling at a speed of 20 km per hour and using various techniques such as artificial intelligence, radar, GPS, and computer vision to self-navigate, monitor their surroundings, automatically break, re-direct at the intersections and avoid obstacles. Japan’s Vice Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications, Mr. Masahiko Tominaga, was one of the distinguished guests who experienced the vehicle on its early days.
With self-driving technologies tested successfully at high-tech zones and campuses, FPT has been invited to work on several automotive projects by demanding Singaporean and Japanese clients. To date, the company has managed to acquire level 3 out of five levels of driving automation and hopefully by the end of 2019 it would gain one more notch. That means, the vehicle would be able to travel with little or no human input under selected road conditions.
For nearly a decade, FPT has been offering numerous services and solutions to world’s top automakers, OEMs, Tier-1 suppliers, and semiconductors in the industry. The global IT services provider leverages forefront innovations and provides engineering services to customers in multiple projects, ranging from In-Vehicle Infotainment, CAD/CAE, Connectivity to Middleware and Embedded Application. By utilizing extensive experience and accumulated know-how and employing a large pool of talents including 2,200 automotive experts and engineers, FPT implements solutions with processes and quality in accordance with AUTOSAR, Automotive SPICE Level 3, and other global standards. Biggest challenges facing the Japanese automotive industry in 2019
Do you know that the automotive industry is undergoing the most significant changes since Henry Ford industrialized automotive manufacturing in 1908? All these changes open up new growth opportunities and bring up big challenges concurrently, requiring YOU – companies in the automotive sector to acknowledge and manage them. Let’s take a look at the key challenges that Japanese automotive industry has to face in 2019.
According to Japan Times, the young generation in Japan, especially those living in the city, prefer to utilize public transport, giving up on car ownership altogether. Young Japanese are not as keen on automobiles as their elders were while the older generation – car enthusiasts – are rapidly aging. Young Japanese no longer view cars as status symbols but find car ownership an “economic liability“. Owning and operating a car involves numerous expenses, including compulsory inspections (shaken) every two to three years, yearly automobile taxes, mandatory and optional insurance, high parking fees, toll expressways and gasoline cost (Source: Japan Automobile Federation). This explains why more young Japanese are shifting their life styles from owning cars to sharing cars – which is more cost efficient. As a result, they have the tendency of falling out of love with cars due to changes in individuals’ values on cars and financial circumstances.
This constitutes a structural obstacle to the business, leading to a decrease in car consumption domestically. The peak of automobiles sales was 7.8 million units in 1990 during the “bubble” economy, which has dropped to almost 70% of its peak now. There is little hope for major growth. The sales of automobiles will continue to decrease as the consumption tax keeps increasing.
Just as phones got smart, so will cars. As digital is increasingly applied to the driving experience, cars now are equipped with safety applications, traffic information services, driver assistance and a vast of infotainment features. All these new technical features aim to deliver safety, comfort, connectivity and ultimately, autonomous driving in the future. Worldwide sales of connected vehicles are expected to grow to slightly more than 77 million units annually by 2022, rising at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19% from about 19 million in 2014, according to IHS Automotive. In Japan, the connected-car related market is likely to expand to as large as a trillion yen by 2020. The market is projected to grow further by 2025 to almost twice the size of 2020 to 2 trillion yen, due to increasing number of connected cars and to wider acceptance of those services that use probe information or cloud ADAS (Source: Yano Research Institute Ltd.)
At present, only 10 percent of cars on Japan’s roads having embedded connectivity, compared with 49 percent in the U.S., 31 percent in Europe, and 20 percent in China, according to consultancy SBD Automotive. The threat to the Japanese carmakers is that they have to compete with competitors on a global level that have experience and have built the ecosystem and service platform. So far, the local carmakers have failed to come up with services that would draw users, according to Matsubara of IHS Markit. Toyota started its connectivity company in 2016 and aims to have 70 percent of new cars on the system by 2020. Nissan said last month it plans to offer connectivity for all new Nissan, Infiniti and Datsun cars sold in key markets by 2022. Honda hasn’t announced a target, but has said it’s in the progress of developing new connected technologies. The turning point will be around 2020 to 2025,” said Takao Asami, Nissan’s senior vice president in charge of research. “If we miss that period, we will have a big problem.”
To respond to the growing demands on connected cars, Japanese automotive players are required to shift their concentration and pursue open innovations. They could turn these challenges into opportunities, but only if they could figure out how to make money from this desire. OEMs will have to manage shorter product and service development cycles, such as software and other technology updates while Tier 1 suppliers will need to add more values in alternative powertrain technologies and in innovative solutions for active safety and infotainment.
Another prominent problem of Japanese automotive industry is going out of skilled and efficient workers. Japan’s population is expected to decline from about 127 million to about 88 million by 2065, according to the National Institute of Population and Social Security. This issue has had huge impacts to every industry, especially Japanese automotive industry. People associated with cars company are near retirement age and automakers couldn’t find their equivalent replacement from young generation. As time passes, this subject becomes a serious concern and major issue for the Japanese automotive industry: replace the ageing engineering sector with young talents and encourage the young generations to pursue their career in the automotive field. That Japanese youngsters stay apathetic and indifferent towards cars or automotive division is definitely not going to be solved straightforwardly.
Gradually, this has caused labour shortage for Japanese automotive players and auto part suppliers, requiring them to change the traditional business management, operation or product strategy. They are facing with the challenges in optimizing efficiency and product quality despite declining employment. Robots and other automation have recently been utilized as resolutions to meet labour shortages.
To mitigate challenges and capture future growth, Japanese automotive players cannot simply turn to their traditional toolbox. They need to review and adjust their strategic priorities, deploy the appropriate investments and resources, and establish cooperation with partners from outside the automotive industry.
