 VIETNAM CORNER

 High-tech multinationals invest in VIETNAM

Many giant corporations like Intel of the US, Nidec of Japan and Robert Bosch of Germany are pouring more money into the high-tech field in Ho Chi Minh City.

Viet Nam was said to have advantages over other countries in the region due to its low labor costs and good location for transporting products to other countries in Southeast Asia and other parts of the world.

Viet Nam should create the most favorable conditions for foreign corporations so that they can produce and export hi-tech products here.

Government looks to boost IT sector

A new Government scheme targets growth in the information and communications technology industry at two-to-three times the growth in gross domestic production (GDP) through 2020.

The industry managed to record a growth rate of more than 20 per cent in 2009 despite the global economic downturn, earning a total of US$6.26 billion. The hardware sector saw annual growth of 10 per cent, while the software sector has notched up growth of 50 per cent.

Key issues for developing the IT industry include training and human resources, infrastructure, business competitiveness and market expansion, according to the scheme.

Viet Nam also targets to enter the top 10 of nations in software engineering and digital-related services. Under the plan, the national trademark of Viet Nam IT and Communications would be heavily promoted by highly-competitive IT enterprises.

  MPI forecasts 7-7.5% growth

MPI, the Ministry of Planning and Investment, is optimistic about Vietnam’s economy in 2011, notwithstanding turbulence in world markets, foreign exchange fluctuations and some latent macroeconomic instability at home.

MPI has submitted to the Government its best guess on the outlook for Vietnam’s economy in 2011, the scenario on which near term decision making will be based. According to an article in VnEconomy, MPI believes:

• The GDP growth rate will increase to 7 to 7.5 percent, with all key sectors advancing strongly. (Last month, MPI forecast that Vietnam will finish 2010 with GDP growth of 6.5 percent).

• Foreign direct investment will rise. It is expected to increase by 15.5 percent in 2011 (US$10,2 billion and account for 21.4 percent of the total new investment capital.

• Total export revenues in 2011 are forecast at US$74.25 billion (up 10 percent), and import expenditure at US$88.8 billion (up 9 percent). The trade deficit in 2011 would therefore reach US$14.5 billion, or 19.6 percent of total export revenue.
