Foreign investors keen on hi-tech industries

There are positive signs in the flow of foreign direct investment (FDI) being pumped into hi-tech industries in Vietnam.

A representative from Intel Products Vietnam, which accounts for more than half of the total investment in Saigon Hi-Tech Park, revealed that its plant is test-running its first production line and expects to export its first chips in the third quarter of 2010. Intel decided to increase its investment in the plant to US$1 billion in 2006, making it the largest chip assembly and testing facility the US group has built anywhere in the world.

According to the management board, 86 investors have enquired about business opportunities since the beginning of 2010. Of the 42 enterprises in the park, mainly in high technologies, telecoms and precision engineering, 20 are operational and have made US$174.7 million from exports.

At Nam SaiGon Industrial Zone and Tan Thuan Export-Processing Zone, FDI hi-tech projects have recorded encouraging initial results. Worthy of note is a project to design and produce semi-conductors by Japan’s Renesas Group, which is also planning a second design centre in the Tan Thuan Export-Processing Zone. The HCM City Export-Processing and Industrial Zone also welcomed three foreign hi-tech industry investors in the first half of 2010.

These promising signs indicate that the City’s strategy to develop its hi-tech industry are in line with the Country’s policy for attracting FDI in the future, which gives top priority to hi-tech industries, including electronics, micro-electronics and biological products.

  E-commerce expansion by 2015

E-commerce will be widely used by Vietnamese companies for all transactions in line with their Southeast Asian competitors by 2015.

The target is one of several in the E-commerce Development Master Plan for the 2010-15 period, which has already been approved by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung with the aim of strengthening the competitiveness of domestic enterprises.

By 2015, major corporations will have adopted e-commerce solutions to deal with their partners, while small- and medium-sized businesses should be using e-commerce for most of their transactions. In addition, the master plan sets customer-service targets and encourages businesses to adopt e-commerce solutions.

This approved plan also underlines the Country's need to fulfill its international obligations to provide public services and business via online provision and non-paper based trade in the fields of tax, customs, imports and exports, investment, and business registration.

FPT Software Engineering to hold an Origami Performance Show

FPT Software Engineering will hold an Origami Performance Show on July 24, 2010 at FPT CauGiay Building. It should be a very special show because all the Origami works will be created and performed by employees of FPT Software, rather than famous origami experts. Not only will employees have a chance to show their talent and skill through their Origami works but other staff will also be able to study more about this fascinating art and enjoy their colleagues’ performance.

Origami (from ori meaning "folding", and kami meaning "paper") is the traditional Japanese folk art of paper folding, which started in the 17th Century AD and was popularized in the mid-1900s. Since then, it has evolved into a modern art form. The goal is to transform a flat sheet of paper into a finished sculpture through folding and sculpting techniques, and as such the use of cuts or glue are not considered to be origami.
