Vietnam records positive economic growth in 2009
|
Vietnam’s economic performance in 2009 has
been highlighted by its positive growth, stable inflation
rate, high industrial output and success in attracting
foreign investment, despite the negative impacts of the
global economic crisis.
The gross domestic product (GDP) increased
by 5.32%, 0.2%higher than the target set by the National
Assembly.
The whole year’s consumer price index
(CPI) recorded a year on year rise of only 6.88% compared to
2008, lower than the forecast of 7% and the lowest in the
most recent six years.
The nation attracted more than US$21.4
billion in foreign investment capital, equal to 30% of the
figure of 2008, the year that FDI reached record levels.
However, the global economic downturn has
badly affected Vietnam’s exports. The country’s export
revenues only reached US$56.5 billion this year, a year on
year drop of nearly 10%.
Economists have forecast that Vietnam’s
economy could grow at 6.5% while its export revenues could
rise by 6%, with the CPI increasing by less than 7% next
year.

Hanoi Flower Festival blooms for the New Year
|
The second annual Hanoi Flower Festival
kicked off on December 30, 2009 at Ly Thai To Square, Hanoi
as part of activities gearing up for the 1,000th anniversary
of Thang Long-Hanoi. Participants in the opening ceremonies
included Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan, Deputy Prime
Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan, and Hanoi officials.
At the start of the event, a
4.5-meter-high “Khue Van Cac” pavilion was unveiled, created
using 1,000 yellow daisies. Another 1,000 flowers were used
to form a 10m-long train on a traditional dress fashioned by
artisans from Hanoi. The number 1,000 was also created using
thousands of blossoms floating on the surface of Hoan Kiem
Lake. Images of Long Bien Bridge, Khue Van Cac Pavilion,
rice and flower villages, the four seasons, and a scene
depicting the city’s trams from the last century were on
display. Another highlight was a 6 meter-high tower of
blossoms surrounded by nine dragons woven from fresh flowers
and fruits. They commemorate the Ly Dynasty during its
215-year reign (1010-1225), located near the Ly Thai To
statue.
During the festival, a flower-arranging
contest, an “ao dai” (Vietnam’s traditional long dress)
fashion show and a concert took place to welcome in 2010.
The festival, which drew about 3 million
locals and foreigners, ended on the evening of January 3,
2010.
