Vietnam's 2010 GDP
growth may hit 6.7 percent
|
|
Vietnam's economy may expand by 6.7 percent this year, up
from a target of 6.5 percent, a state-run newspaper reported
on Thursday, quoting a Government official. The country's
gross domestic product (GDP) could rise between 6.9 percent
and 7.2 percent in the second half of the year, the online
newspaper vneconomy.vn cited Cao Viet Sinh, Deputy Minister
of Planning and Investment, as saying. "If this level is
achieved, this year's GDP growth may exceed 6.5 percent,
maybe about 6.7 percent," stated Sinh. Vietnam's economy
grew an estimated 6.4 percent in the second quarter from a
year earlier, accelerating from growth of 5.83 percent in
the first three months, the Government Statistics Office
said. GDP rose 6.16 percent in the first half of 2010 from
the same period last year, it said. Economists said growth
in the first half suggested Vietnam might hit its 6.5
percent target, but higher credit growth was needed to
maintain the pace in the second half.

Over 650,000 students sit university entrance exams |
|
More than 650,000 candidates in group A subjects (maths,
physics, and chemistry) and V subjects (maths, physics and a
field-specific subject) sat their first day of university
entrance exams on July 4, accounting for 75 percent of the
total registrations for university entrance exams across the
country, a 6.2 percent rise against last year. The first day
of examinations took place in an orderly and disciplined
atmosphere with tightened test regulations. Universities had
made better preparations, such as guiding students through
registration procedures, and providing them with more
comfortable conditions to rest after sitting their exams.
Nearly 54 percent of candidates chose to sit group A
subjects followed by group B (maths, chemistry,
biology) (19.8 percent), group D (literature, maths, foreign
languages) (15.2 percent), group C (literature, history,
geography) (8 percent), and the other groups (nearly 3.4
percent).
