Vietnam gains advantage in Wimax race

Vietnam’s early granting of frequency bands and licenses, and facilitating tests of Wimax technology has proved the wisdom of the Vietnamese government in issuing policies to attract investment in the field of technology, signaling that Vietnam will become one of the Wimax pioneers.

Wimax became a hot issue after Intel Chairman Craig Barrett, during his visit to India, asked the Indian government not to protect old technologies but rather to create favorable conditions for other new technologies, and he disclosed that Intel had chosen Vietnam and China for its transistor plants. Some big markets in Asia, such as India and Taiwan, have recently paid special attention to Wimax, proving that the popularity of this technology is on the increase.

High road for Vietnam-US ICT cooperation

Vietnam has surpassed China and India to become the most rapidly developing ICT export market of the US (20%). The US’ imports of ICT products from Vietnam also grew by 62%, compared with the previous year.

Three major factors which are attracting American ICT equipment producers to Vietnam are low tariffs, a positive investment environment and improving standards. However, to strengthen bilateral trade on ICT, Vietnam needs to improve its ICT infrastructure, network security, skills and training, software infringement, e-commerce, and government procurement.

After five years implementing the Vietnam-US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), Vietnam’s ranking on the list of US trade partners has jumped from 66th to 43rd. In Asia, Vietnam ranks a healthy third after China and India.
